Important Message From Dr. Murray

Dear Lakeside Families:

It is hard to believe that our school year is well past the halfway point. Plans are being made for Prom, graduation, and the many school trips that will take place in the coming months. In addition, we are celebrating the successes of our basketball teams, and looking forward to baseball, softball, and tennis. I am blessed to be part of such a wonderful school community and look forward to a great second half of the school year. Even as we enjoy this year, we are beginning plans for the 2012-13 school year. The Board is working to complete the tuition contract details for the 2012-13 school year and registration will begin by the end of February. Students who are currently enrolled will be given first opportunity to register before we open registration to new families. Please remember that in order to register, your account must be current (all tuition and other financial obligations must be settled) with the business office.

As we look toward next year we are looking for ways to augment and improve our programs:
1. One thing we will be offering next year is a dual enrollment program (through The University of Alabama and Troy University). This will give our Upper School students an opportunity to simultaneously earn high school and college credit, gain experience with the expectations of college course work, and build stronger high school transcripts that will serve them well when they apply to colleges and universities. In many ways such a dual enrollment program is superior to the Advanced Placement (AP) courses offered in many schools because successful completion of the course immediately results in college credit (which is not true of AP courses), and these dual enrollment courses are taught by university instructors which guarantees a more authentic college course experience than the AP courses taught by high school instructors.

2.To support this dual enrollment program we will need additional computers. Please enthusiastically support our Spring fundraisers (for example, The Lakeside Auction) so we can have a needed second computer lab for our students.

3. We are examining ways to provide additional grammar/composition instruction in the MS years when the foundation in these important areas must be developed.

4. We are looking at ways to provide computer exploratory experiences for our Lower School students so they can begin to develop the necessary computer skills they will need in future years.

5. As a way to learn how we can improve in other areas I will be hosting a series of morning meetings with parents during February. The goal in these meetings is for parents to have an opportunity to ask questions and express ways The Lakeside School can continue to improve. These meetings will be held from 8:00am-8:45am in Room 1 on the following days:

Monday February 6: Pre School
Tuesday February 7: Kindergarten
Wednesday February 8: 1st Grade
Thursday February 9: 2nd Grade
Friday February 10: 3rd Grade
Monday February 13: 4th Grade
Tuesday February 14: 5th and 6th Grades
Wednesday February 15: 7th and 8th Grades
Thursday February 16: 9th and 10th Grades
Friday February 17: 11th and 12th Grades

I am excited about the school we are and the school we can become!! Thank you very much for your commitment to Lakeside. GO CHIEFS!!
