NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR NAMED

Welcome Coach Allen Ponder

After a diligent search for a new Lakeside Athletic Director and Head Basketball/Baseball coach, please join us in welcoming Coach Allen Ponder.  Allen has most recently been employed by Lee-Scott and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama.  Allen played baseball at the University of Alabama and Auburn University Montgomery where he was a pitcher and first baseman.  Following college, he played professional baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates.  He has coached girls and boys basketball and had extensive baseball coaching experience.

The Lakeside selection committee received 28 resumes’ from an AISA job posting and other sources.  A telephone interview was conducted with 7 candidates and 5 were asked to come in for a personal interview with the committee.  The entire board of directors then interviewed 3 of the applicants.  Once credentials were verified and recommendations from AISA athletic directors and a College level Head Basketball coach were received, Allen was selected by the Board of Directors and offered the job.

Lakeside is excited to have such a qualified and dynamic Athletic Director.  Go Chiefs!

Troy University’s Accelerate Dual Enrollment Online Meeting Thursday, March 1 at 6:00 p.m. in the Library

How does ACCELERATE Dual Enrollment Online work?
ACCELERATE Dual Enrollment Online is a dual enrollment program that allows students to take college courses while earning their high school diplomas. Students will receive high school credit and college credit at the same time. One great thing about ACCELERATE is that there are no extra classes to attend. It is an online learning program through eTROY. So, all courses are completed online, which makes scheduling easier on you and your child.
What is online learning?
Taking courses online means that all coursework is communicated, completed and turned in on the Internet. Your student will interact with professors and classmates via the computer, which means assignments and tests can be completed when your student's schedule permits. You will be amazed at what your student is capable of when put in control of his or her own learning environment!
What are the benefits of ACCELERATE Dual Enrollment Online?
Preparation for college - Having a few college credits under their belts prior to high school graduation will give students an extra boost of confidence as they embark on their collegiate careers. The workload for ACCELERATE will give students a true representation of what will be expected of them in college. Their experiences will strengthen their time management and study skills while they are still surrounded by the safety net of home, family and friends. Therefore, they will be more prepared for the demands of college by participating in the program. How many credits students complete before earning their high school diplomas will be up to each individual student, but it is possible to earn an Associate's Degree by the time they finish their senior year!
Higher grade point averages - On average, participants in dual enrollment programs have significantly higher cumulative college GPAs than their peers who do not participate in dual enrollment.
Enriching courses - Thanks to TROY's many resources, ACCELERATE Dual Enrollment Online is able to offer challenging and exciting classes that students might not otherwise have the opportunity to take. Students will interact with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, which is sure to broaden their worldviews and make them more well-rounded individuals. All instruction for the program will be provided by certified Troy University faculty.
Save time and money - Your student's participation in ACCELERATE Dual Enrollment Online will save you money later. Because some credit is earned before entering the traditional university setting, students have the opportunity to finish college more quickly, which means lower college costs in the long run. Also, ACCELERATE students are not responsible for costs such as housing, meal plans and others associated with the conventional college setting.
Continue active role in education - Because your student will be taking university courses while living at home, you can continue to be a part of your student's education. We believe it's important for you to be there to help your student adjust to the workload of online college classes.
What's the difference between a dual enrollment course and an Advanced Placement (AP) course?
A dual enrollment course is a college class taught by a qualified, college-level faculty member.
When your student finishes an ACCELERATE course with a passing grade, he or she will not have to take the course again in college.
Upon successful completion of a dual enrollment course, your student will be awarded both high school and college credit. For AP classes, college credit is only awarded if your student does well on the AP exam.
A high school transcript and a college transcript are separately generated for each school.
What are the eligibility requirements?
We accept high school sophomores, juniors and seniors with at least a 20 ACT score or 950 SAT score and a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher. All applicants will be required to fill out and sign the ACCELERATE Approval Contract.
Will these credits transfer to the college of the student's choice?
The dual enrollment courses available through ACCELERATE are designed to transfer to any college or university. They can be used to satisfy the general education core requirement at the freshman or sophomore level of college. If you have questions about the transferability of your credits, check with the ACCELERATE Program Coordinator.
How much does the ACCELERATE Program cost? (2011-2012 Academic Year)
Tuition is $260/credit hour and there is an $8/credit hour technology fee. There is a one-time Application Fee of $30. Students are also responsible for purchasing the textbook associated with their class.
Why Troy University?
Troy University is known as a leader in distance education around the world. We boast state-of-the-art technology to support ACCELERATE students. With over 120 years of experience in education, our accredited institution is capable of serving every need of your student. Eight Lakeside Students' Art Accepted For Youth Art Month At WMA

Last week Mrs. Jackson took 23 art entries to Wiregrass Museum of Art in Dothan. From 18 schools submitting work, our school had 8 entries acceptedfor this show, which will hang at the museum during the month of March. There will be 85 pieces in the show, representing students from all over the Wiregrass area. Parents and students will receive an invitation from the museum to the opening of the exhibit. The show will hang from March 6 through March 31st. I am really happy for these students, whose art was accepted:

Jax Puckett - Kindergarten
Alex Bush--1st grade
Scout Kirkland--2nd grade
Emily Moshell & Bogdon Garrett--4th grade
Drew McGowan--5th grade
Logan Grubbs--6th grade
Annie Adams--7th grade

STATE CHAMPS AGAIN

Congratulations to our girl's basketball team for defeating Evangel 82-77 in overtime to capture their second consecutive State Championship. Kasey Grant and Lexie Gibson were named to the all-tournament team and Jasonie Guice was named toournament MVP.

While I was excited and proud to watch our Lady Chiefs hoist yet another state championship trophy yesterday, I am most proud of how they earned this championship. Few outside of this school gave them much chance of repeating at the beginning of the year, and fewer still gave them a chance when Peyton Brown went down with a season-ending knee injury. Yet, they continued to work and believe, and they fought their way through adversity and three very tough opponents to earn their state championship. And not only did they overcome the odds to earn a state title, they did it with a dignity and class that even opposing teams recognized and acknowledged. I received two e-mails yesterday, one from a parent of an Autauga player (who we beat on Tuesday night) and another from a parent of a Patrician player (who we beat last week), commenting on the class our team demonstrated. Both parents mentioned that Coaches Ward and Burden carried themselves with class and that this obviously filtered down to all of our players. Let’s all be joyful about the state title these girls earned, but let’s be mindful to put even greater emphasis on celebrating how they did it. WAY TO GO LADY CHIEFS!!

Big Green Egg Raffle

As part of The Lakeside Auction, we are having a raffle for a Big Green Egg grill. Please go to the following link for details: http://lakesidechiefs.com/raffle_green_egg.pdf

The Lakeside Auction

Please mark your calendars for one of our largest fundraisers of the year. The Lakeside Auction is Saturday, March 3rd at the Eufaula Country Club. The auction includes silent and live items. The tickets are $25 per person which includes food and beverages. A cash bar will be available. This year we will have a Vegas theme and a special entertainer, The King (an Elvis impersonator). A Big Green Egg grill will also be raffled and those tickets are $10 each.

Our biggest goal of the auction this year is to raise funds for the second computer lab that will be needed to offer the dual enrollment program with Troy University and the University of Alabama. The dual enrollment program gives upper school students the opportunity to earn high school and college credits, gain experience in performing college course work, and build stronger transcripts that will serve our students well when applying to college and universities.

How can you help? You can attend the auction and encourage your family and friends to attend. Most silent auction items sale for $50 or less. Student artwork will also be available to purchase. Your child’s room mother will be contacting you for a small cash donation to help purchase the class gift for the auction, and I encourage you to participate. You may also like to donate an item personally or have connections to a business that would like to donate. Some popular items from the past are baked goods, gift certificates, artwork, gift baskets, sports paraphernalia, trips, hunts, appliances, electronics, pottery, and decorative items. We welcome any new ideas!

Volunteers are needed for event planning, ticket sales, event set-up, and the night of the event. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to volunteer.

I look forward to seeing you on March 3rd.

Go Chiefs!

Important Message From Dr. Murray

Dear Lakeside Families:

It is hard to believe that our school year is well past the halfway point. Plans are being made for Prom, graduation, and the many school trips that will take place in the coming months. In addition, we are celebrating the successes of our basketball teams, and looking forward to baseball, softball, and tennis. I am blessed to be part of such a wonderful school community and look forward to a great second half of the school year. Even as we enjoy this year, we are beginning plans for the 2012-13 school year. The Board is working to complete the tuition contract details for the 2012-13 school year and registration will begin by the end of February. Students who are currently enrolled will be given first opportunity to register before we open registration to new families. Please remember that in order to register, your account must be current (all tuition and other financial obligations must be settled) with the business office.

As we look toward next year we are looking for ways to augment and improve our programs:
1. One thing we will be offering next year is a dual enrollment program (through The University of Alabama and Troy University). This will give our Upper School students an opportunity to simultaneously earn high school and college credit, gain experience with the expectations of college course work, and build stronger high school transcripts that will serve them well when they apply to colleges and universities. In many ways such a dual enrollment program is superior to the Advanced Placement (AP) courses offered in many schools because successful completion of the course immediately results in college credit (which is not true of AP courses), and these dual enrollment courses are taught by university instructors which guarantees a more authentic college course experience than the AP courses taught by high school instructors.

2.To support this dual enrollment program we will need additional computers. Please enthusiastically support our Spring fundraisers (for example, The Lakeside Auction) so we can have a needed second computer lab for our students.

3. We are examining ways to provide additional grammar/composition instruction in the MS years when the foundation in these important areas must be developed.

4. We are looking at ways to provide computer exploratory experiences for our Lower School students so they can begin to develop the necessary computer skills they will need in future years.

5. As a way to learn how we can improve in other areas I will be hosting a series of morning meetings with parents during February. The goal in these meetings is for parents to have an opportunity to ask questions and express ways The Lakeside School can continue to improve. These meetings will be held from 8:00am-8:45am in Room 1 on the following days:

Monday February 6: Pre School
Tuesday February 7: Kindergarten
Wednesday February 8: 1st Grade
Thursday February 9: 2nd Grade
Friday February 10: 3rd Grade
Monday February 13: 4th Grade
Tuesday February 14: 5th and 6th Grades
Wednesday February 15: 7th and 8th Grades
Thursday February 16: 9th and 10th Grades
Friday February 17: 11th and 12th Grades

I am excited about the school we are and the school we can become!! Thank you very much for your commitment to Lakeside. GO CHIEFS!!

Congratulations Peyton Brown

On January 26 and 27, Peyton Brown along with 90 excited young women competed in the Miss Alabama Teen USA Pageant in Montgomery. The Miss Alabama Teen USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the State of Alabama in the Miss Teen USA Pageant. Becoming a Miss Alabama Teen USA contestant requires a lot of personal initiative. Winning the state pageant means an array of prizes, a trip to represent the state in the Miss Teen USA pageant and of course, the coveted crown. There is a lot of dedication involved -- a process that takes months. Characteristics of a Miss Teen USA are: poise, courage, beauty, grace and intellect. Our own Miss Peyton Brown was crowned Miss Alabama Teen USA 2012 on Saturday night. Congratulations Peyton!!!!!
